Hail and wind storms hit Chicagoland every year, and the insurance claim that follows can feel overwhelming. Style Exteriors by Corley has helped many local homeowners through storm damage roof and siding claims. Here’s how the process works and how we help.
The insurance claim process, step by step
Free storm damage inspection
We inspect your roof, siding, gutters, soffit and windows and photograph any hail or wind damage, so you know whether a claim makes sense before you call your insurer.
File your claim
If there is meaningful damage, you file the claim with your insurance company. Have your policy number and the date of the storm handy.
Adjuster meeting
Your insurer sends an adjuster. We can be there to point out the damage we documented so nothing is missed.
Review the scope
We review the insurer’s estimate against what your home needs and provide a detailed, itemized scope, including code items and supplements where they apply.
Restoration
Once approved, we schedule the work, install with manufacturer-backed warranties, and provide the photos and paperwork your insurer needs to close the claim.
Signs of storm damage to look for
- Dents or dimples on gutters, downspouts, vents and window wraps
- Missing, creased or lifted shingles after high winds
- Granules collecting at downspout outlets
- Cracked, chipped or holed siding, especially vinyl
- Water stains on ceilings or in the attic

What insurance typically covers, and what it doesn’t
| Usually covered | Usually not covered |
|---|---|
| Sudden hail or wind damage to roofing, siding, gutters and windows | Normal wear and tear or an aging roof |
| Interior water damage caused by a covered storm | Damage from long-term leaks or lack of maintenance |
| Code-required items, if your policy includes ordinance or law coverage | Upgrades beyond like-kind-and-quality (unless you pay the difference) |
Every policy is different. Your insurance company decides what is covered; read your policy or ask your agent about your deductible, depreciation (ACV vs. replacement cost) and ordinance or law coverage.
Our promises on insurance work
- Honest assessments. If your damage doesn’t justify a claim, we’ll tell you. Don’t lie, don’t cheat, don’t steal is how we operate. Read our story.
- No deductible games. Reputable contractors don’t offer to “cover” or waive your deductible. We won’t either.
- Upgrades are your choice. Want to upgrade to a premium shingle or siding while the work is being done? We’ll price the difference transparently. See our Free & Fair Pricing Guarantee.
- Warranty-backed restoration. As an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred and CertainTeed ShingleMaster Premier contractor, we can register enhanced warranties on insurance jobs too.
Insurance claim FAQs
How long do I have to file a claim after a storm?
Deadlines vary by policy, and many policies set a limit measured from the date of loss. Check your policy and file promptly; waiting can also let small leaks cause bigger damage.
Will filing a claim raise my rates?
Weather-related claims are generally treated differently from at-fault claims, but every insurer is different. Ask your agent.
What if my claim is denied?
We’ll review the denial and the damage with you. Sometimes additional documentation or a re-inspection is warranted; sometimes a repair is the better path. Either way, we’ll give you a straight answer.
Do you handle flat roofs on insurance claims?
Yes. We repair and replace low-slope and flat roofs as well as shingle, metal and synthetic roofs.
